In the summer of 1990, a fledgling Chinook Owners Association held its first Specialty show in Dayton, Ohio. Having only heard of this very rare breed, we attended out of curiousity. Little did we know that we would be coming back with our first Chinook puppy that very day. Celina came all the way from WY, from a rustic breeder who sold her to pay for the return trip. She proved to be one of only 30 breedable purebred Chinooks in existance at the time. The entire breed was in fact in the process of making a fragile comeback from the 11 dogs recovered in the 1981 breed rescue who themselves trace back through only 4 Chinooks.

CH Winterset Celina Swift, 1992 Nat'l Spec BOS
With 9 litters of puppies bred since 1990, we are far from the most prolific Chinook breeder, but we are one of a very small handful of the longest tenured breeders still active today and have made a substantial mark on the breed. Our high purity breeding program has produced numerous champions, grand champions, and National Specialty BOB, BOS and class winners. In addition to show ring accomplishments, we have made substantial health progress by taking carefully calculated risks for preservation of genetic diversity and then selecting hard against the most common health issues present in the breed. We have a solid track record with temperament, hip, eye, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and neurological health. Just how well are we doing in these areas? Our OFA record speaks for itself . As of 12/22/08, there are 25 Chinooks in the OFA database that are either bred/co-bred by Boreayl or sired by a Boreayl male and our breakdown is 24% OFA Excellent, 48% OFA Good, 24% OFA Fair, and 4% Dysplastic. This means 96% passing hip evaluations in a breed that averages only 6.7% OFA Excellent with 19% dysplastic. This does not mean that we've never produced a health issue. We do however keep the risk to an absolute minimum in our puppies by health testing, sharing health information with a network breeders, and exercising care not to use sire/dam combinations with a high risk for the same health issues, even if it means passing up a breeding that would be otherwise excellent for show.
Our AKC FSS and UKC dual-registered breeding program contains both high purity Chinooks and Chinooks descending from Amorok's Top Gun, the only modern founder with extensive, documented health and pedigree information behind him. We believe that by maintaining two different breedings strategies within our own kennel, we are preserving a diversity of breeding and outcross options so that they remain available for future fanciers.
